Evaluation of equine corneal endothelium after exposure to 0.05% brilliant blue - an in vitro study Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Andrade,M.C.C.; Moreno,T.M.; Muccillo,M.S.; Pigatto,J.A.T.; Camilo,E.V..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the immediate effects of 0.05% brilliant blue on corneal endothelium of horses. Thirty-eight corneas of 19 horses, male or female, of different ages were studied. Corneas were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1: Corneal endothelium was covered with 0.3mL of brilliant blue 0.05% for 60 seconds followed by rinsing with a balanced salt solution. Group 2: Corneal endothelium was covered with BSS for 60 seconds. The corneas were excised with an 8mm trephine and prepared to analyze posterior endothelial surface using a light microscope (24 corneas) and a scanning electron microscope (14 corneas). The equine posterior corneal endothelium surface observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy...

Feline intraocular sarcoma associated with phthisis bulbi Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Perlmann,E.; Rodarte-Almeida,A.C.V.; Albuquerque,L.; Safatle,A.M.V.; Pigatto,J.A.T.; Barros,P.S.M..
Two cases of feline intraocular sarcoma were reported in stray cats that presented blindness and hypotonia of the affected eye for years before the tumor development. Phthisis bulbi, a final stage of a severe inflammation of the eye, is frequently unmonitored because eyes are blind, small, opaque, and not painful. Yet, this report shows that monitoring and early enucleation of eyes of cats with phthisis bulbi are important and should be considered as a treatment option, because feline intraocular sarcoma is an aggressive tumor that significantly decreases live expectancy.

Modified extracapsular extraction versus endocapsular phacoemulsification: intraoperative and immediate postoperative events Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Honsho,C.S.; Oriá,A.P.; Pigatto,J.A.T.; Laus,J.L..
The clinical events and variations in intraocular pressure (IOP) that occur in endocapsular phacoemulsification technique were compared to the modified extracapsular extraction technique during the intraoperative and immediate postoperative periods. Phacoemulsification technique caused less corneal edema, less ocular discomfort and fewer postoperative complications than the modified extracapsular extraction technique. The observed increase in postoperative IOP, especially in the case of phacoemulsification, makes pressure monitoring mandatory, as well as the use of ocular hypotensive agents when the IOP exceeds acceptable limits.

Systemic absortion and adverse effects of topical ocular use of ketorolac tromethamine and sodium diclofenac in New Zealand rabbits for 90 days Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Pereira,F.Q.; Santos,B.; Carboni,T.; Bender,M.; Driemeier,D.; Cunha,A.C.B.; Biajoli,M.G.; Mello,F.B.; Silva,P.R.; Pigatto,J.A.T.; Mello,J.R.B..
ABSTRACT The effect of the systemic absorption of 0.1% diclofenac sodium (DS) eyedrop was compared to that of 0.5% ketorolac tromethamine (KT) in female New Zealand white rabbits treated on both eyes three times a day for 90 days. The rabbits were divided in three groups of six animals (n= 18): KT group, DS group, and control (Co) group, in which saline (0.9% NaCl) solution was instilled. Water and food consumption were measured daily, clinical examination was performed weekly, and blood samples were collected every 30 days for laboratory examination. The plasma was analyzed for the presence of KT and DS by solid-phase extraction (SPE) associated with mass spectrometry (MS). Systemic absorption of these drugs was confirmed by SPE-MS, allowing their...
